I get a lot of questions about art school. Whether it’s asking me if I go to one, why don’t I go to one, what do I think about them, etc. This pretty much sums it up :)
I didn’t really decide not to go to art school. I never went and I never really had an interest in paying so much money for a private art school. The great thing about art is, having a degree and getting good grades is great, but its your actual work and skill that says volumes about what you can or cannot do. It lets whatever future employers you’re hoping to work for or with know what you’re capable of which says a lot more than a piece of paper with grades on it. If you’re not looking to become a freelance artist, most employers prefer at least a Bachelors degree in your field, so paying all that money to add the word Fine Art to that degree doesn’t appeal to me. I go to a quality university with a quality design and art program. I am learning a lot, getting great internships, and developing my craft, and I am confident enough in my work and skills to think I stand a chance out there in the real world :)
Private art schools are great, especially if you are interested in pursuing a specific craft that is not offered at any normal university, or at least a good quality one. But I just don’t want people to think that if they want to pursue a field in some kind of art that the only way they can make it is if they pay for a private art school. Money is usually a factor for students and I just want people to seriously consider their options.
